Sausage Roll Recipe from Australia

Summer barbecue and you want to serve something besides just burgers and hot dogs? Sausage rolls.

Super Bowl Sunday and you need a dish that’s gonna get the people GOIN’? Sausage rolls for sure.

You can also change the flavor of this dish just by providing an array of dipping sauces. My personal preference was barbecue sauce, but in Australia, ketchup is more common. Honey mustard, buffalo sauce, or even no sauce at all are also great options!

What Ingredients are In this Sausage Roll Recipe?

Puff pastry sheets
Jimmy Deans ground sausage
Carrot
Onion
Italian bread crumbs
Milk
Garlic
Salt and pepper
Barbecue sauce
Egg
Water

Can You Freeze this Sausage Roll Recipe?

Yes! My recommendation for freezing your sausage rolls is to roll everything into the puff pastry dough and freeze it before cooking.

Then, when it comes time to cook the rolls, remove them from the fridge and allow them to thaw completely before cooking for the recommended amount of time.

If you need to cook the Sausage Roll Recipe and then freeze them, you can do that, too! When freezing your sausage rolls, make sure to freeze them in a way where they won’t get easily frostbitten.

For me, this typically means that I wrap them in parchment paper, then aluminum foil, then put them in a plastic bag.

The puff pastry will get freezer burn easily, so this method should ward off any potential frost biting that may occur.

Can I Prepare Sausage Rolls the Night Before?

Yes, totally! You can mix the filling and cut the rolls out the night before if you’d like.

Then, on the day that you need the Sausage Roll Recipe baked, you can throw them in the oven and turn it on. They should puff up nicely.

I wouldn’t recommend putting together your Sausage Roll Recipe more than a day in advance, because you don’t want the puff pastry sheets to get soggy!

If you need to prep them more than a day in advance, follow the freezing instructions above.

What Can I Dip My Sausage Rolls In?

It’s very common to have dipping sauces to eat your Sausage Roll Recipe with! Some of the most common choices are ketchup or barbecue sauce.

You can also dip them in cheese sauce, marinara sauce, mustard, or any other sauces that you want! If you try another sauce that I haven’t listed here, let me know! I’d love to hear the creative options that you come up with.

How Long Do Homemade Sausage Rolls Last?

If you make this Sausage Roll recipe at home, they should last in the fridge for about 5 days. Because there is meat in the recipe, I wouldn’t stretch it much longer than that!

How Do You Keep Sausage Rolls Crispy?

A vital part of reheating your sausage rolls is making sure that they stay crispy. The WORST thing in the world is when you reheat dishes like this and end up with a soggy mess!

My recommendation would be to line a cookie sheet with aluminum foil. Put your Sausage Roll Recipe on the aluminum covered baking sheet and heat in the oven at about 450 degrees.

Heat just until the Sausage Rolls are warmed through! Then remove from the oven and enjoy!

Make ‘em, eat ‘em, love ‘em. You know you want to.
